Tavan Elementary School “ Using Technology to Teach Others about Conservation” Grades 3-5 SPEECH

Unit Plan Summary: In this unit, you will be able to use various recourses to educate others about conservation at our school! We will use a computer, internet, PowerPoint, camera, flip camera, wikisites, digitalstories or other technology as tools to familiarize students and staff. You will generate questions, complete interviews, and create different ways to present the information. Using these, you will present to our school or others!

Essential Question How are things interconnected?

Unit Questions How am I affected by the environment? Why does recycling matter? Why is it important to recycle? How do we recycle at our school? What can each student do to improve? What can students do to help others to recycle? Why do we need to recycle? What does our school recycle and why? Content Questions

Benefits of Using Project Approaches, Ongoing Assessment, and CFQs in My Unit Students use their writing skills to write about conservation at school. Their writing has a real audience—students at Tavan and other schools. Students collaborate with peers to collect information about the topic. They learn writing and thinking skills while they are working on the project. Throughout the project they give and receive feedback on their work.

By Using Project Approaches, Ongoing Assessment, and CFQs My Students Will:  Experience writing for a real audience and use technology to enhance their learning  Gain self-assessment and self-direction skills that they will use and build on during school year

Gauging Student Needs Assessment I will use my Essential and Unit Questions to: Find out what students think about how we are interconnected as people with the environment and how they can make a difference Gather information on higher-order thinking and 21 st century skills: By applying persuasive writer’s checklist information on how good writers write, students will show their metacognitive awareness of writing strategies By taking on different perspectives and predicting their needs, students will anticipate what people need to know about recycling

Gauging Student Needs Assessment What I will learn from the assessment What my students know about persuasive writing so I know what to teach them What writing process my students use What my students will gain from the assessment An their thoughts about good writing A chance to set writing goals for the unit

My Goals Learn about different kinds of technology that will motivate my students Find ways to get my students to do more higher-order thinking Learn some strategies for helping students write clearly and to the point

Let’s Have a Great Year!
