Role of the therapist

Role of the sports massage therapist The sports massage therapist has a varied job: preparing athletes for competition, helping with recovery & cool down after competition as well as dealing with any injuries or symptoms A therapist should be qualified to at least a diploma standard accredited by (VTCT) although it is possible to study to a degree level

Knowledge of the therapist To be an effective sports therapist you need to demonstrate a range of knowledge, physical & personal skills Knowledge: a good knowledge of anatomy & physiology, exercise physiology, massage techniques & effects of massage Physical: skills in massage techniques, strapping, stretching, first aid, therapeutic modalities (ultrasound, laser, electrotherapy & ice), resistance training & first aid Personal: attributes & skills – professional, honest, reliable, good personal hygiene as well as good listening & communicating skills

A therapist must know their limits & when to seek advice or when to refer a client, this is due to the diagnosis of certain conditions may require more expertise. Treatment maybe provided once the client has been given the all clear by the relevant medical professional. This is where massage therapists need to work alongside other professionals such as physiotherapists & doctors. The massage therapist may need to perform other treatments such as strapping & electrotherapy

Administration A sports massage therapist will usually have to deal with administration duties & may set up their own private practice. These businesses are usually set up at local gyms, sports clubs, leisure centres & medical centres. Some therapist are mobile & will travel to clients’ homes. It is useful to have a sound knowledge of sport specific techniques & good understanding of the demands of competition
