Unconscious vs. Conscious Conscious- (Adj.) having knowledge of something; aware. Unconscious – (Adj.) not realized, planned, or done; without choice or intent. Discuss with your group: 1 Example of something you have done consciously 1 Example of something you have done unconsciously

In your text… There are examples of prejudice (beliefs) and discrimination (actions) These discriminations are result of both conscious and unconscious actions Similarly, there are allies that act consciously and unconsciously as such

Step One Prejudice beliefDiscriminatory actionUnconscious/conscious Coach Boone thinks girls should play with dolls (gender roles) Sheryl talks to Boone about football and he says,“Why don’t you get that girl a pretty doll?” Unconscious. I think Coach Boone doesn’t understand that other girls his daughters age are and want to be interested in different things. Football isn’t just a boy’s interest. Player thinks that African Americans are less than human (race). Rev gets tackled by the opposite team and the player says, “Song’s over Sambo.” Conscious. The player knew that the term was used in a racist context and used to justify slavery and Jim Crow laws in the south.

Step Two Who is acting as an ally for your character? How are they acting as an ally?Unconscious/conscious
