Sand Paper Notes This powerpoint is for the students, the information is in note form and not in complete details. Please review all the slide notes for more detailed information for the instructor so the note form can be easily explained.

What is sand paper? Why do we need it? How do I know what kind to use? What is it: Without sandpaper any completed project would still look bad. You can do the best tooling work and with out sanding no craftsman will be able to complete his work. Kids ask all the time “ what is the best word to work with?” I tell them,” the best wood is the one you are going to work your best with, and sanding and finishing is what makes the difference.” Why do we need it – We need sandpaper to get all the marks out left from machine and hand tools. Those tools cut, so does sandpaper but on a micro scopic level. You can’t see I with the naked eye but the rocks onteh paper do the cutting just like a saw. How do I know what to use - Paper with the bigger rocks will make a rougher finish, the smaller rocks will be a smoother and softer finish. What is sand paper? Why do we need it? How do I know what kind to use?

Sand paper is a combination of 3 items? What is Sandpaper? Sand paper is a combination of 3 items? A backing material - cloth or paper An adhesive - Glue or epoxy An abrasive material - natural or manmade

Sandpaper is some type of abrasive mounted on a piece of paper or cloth. It is measured in what is called grit This picture is showing a detailed view of sandpaper The orange is the backing material, this is when students in their groups would be asked to look at the piece they have in their group and see what type of backing they had. The red is the adhesive – Any sandpaper used in an operation that will be getting wet would be epoxy, the rest glue. Rocks – the abrasive material that does the cutting Blue – a top coating, like the one seen in the video that seals the rocks to the paper

What is Grit? Gravity feed Electrostaticly Grit is the way sandpaper is measured. To determine grit it is measure buy the number of pieces in 1 square inch on the paper. It is applied in 2 ways Gravity feed Electrostaticly Gravity feed – Use the example of putting glitter on a project. You put down glue then sprinkle glitter on the project some stays and a lot gets lost. In the gravity feed process there is a lot of waste and is not and it was not as exact as the new method. Electrostaticly – This is the mini sandstorm in the video. Relate this to anyone who has had anything paint powder coated. Someone in class has had a bike frame, or dads dune buggy powder coated. You take a negatiive charge to the frame of the bike and a positive charge to the paint, put them together and they stick much more evenly. Then it is all baked on for a harder thicker finish. Electrostaticly applied sand is the same process.

Ranges of Grit 16 Grit 2000 grit The coarsest paper manufactured is it looks like Rocks on paper Who would use it? The finest paper manufactured is: 2000 grit This is hard to find paper, it feels like notebook paper Who would use it? Hold up a rock about an inch around – This would be one grit, not practical but it would help them see the size of grit. Who uses 16 grit – Metal operations or areas used to strip paint from a hard surface. Not a grit you are going to use in fine wood working. 2000 grit – Hard to find, mostly in auto applications. This is used for wet finishing a high and car paint job.

Grits in woodworking In woodworking the grits usually range from 60 to 220. We will use 4 different grits in our class 60 - Coarse 100 - Medium 150 - Fine 220 – Extra Fine

There are 4 main types sandpaper made Garnet - Used in cabinet making, Natural Material, but Not a durable product Aluminum Oxide - Used in cabinet making, it is a Manufactured product and is a very durable product

Continued….. Emery - Used in metal working with a cloth backing. It is very durable and can get wet. Silicon Carbide Used in auto body work. It is known as Wet dry paper. It has a plastic coating so it can get wet

What will we be using in our classes? We will be using Aluminum Oxide paper. It is a brown color. The darker the color, the coarser the grit generally. Show the 4 – 5 different grits we will be using. Hold them up to the light and you can see your hand though it as the grit get finer. You can see through it because the particle are smaller so you can see more of the paper

How do we sand? The only important thing to remember about sanding in one thing, the direction.

With the Grain It only takes one pass across the grain to require at least 10 passes with the grain to fix it.

Order for Sanding 60 Grit. Start with this. This sand paper should be used to take out the saw marks, and shape your CO2 car. Its not uncommon to spend 3 class periods using 60 grit sand paper. 100 Grit. This will be the beginning of the finishing process. The 100 grit sand paper will take the scratches out from the 60 grit sand paper.

150 Grit. This should be used to create that smooth feel to your car. Wet the wood. Use a wet paper towel to raise the grain of your wood. The wood is very soft and expand when wet. This step will allow you to achieve a better finish in your paint. Let the wood dry overnight. 220 Grit. Now finish sanding your project with 220 grit sand paper. You will notice how smooth your car is!
