Reminders  Vocabulary Unit 10  Regular Quiz – this Friday, 11/20  If you missed the picture quiz and this morning’s make-up, you can come in Thursday morning to make it up.  Check out the PPT on Propaganda to add to your knowledge!  Rhetorical Analyses  Rough Draft for Rhetorical Analysis #2 – due Thursday, 11/19  Bring BOTH final drafts of Rhetorical Analysis #1 and #2 to class Friday. I will pick up ONE for a grade.  Outliers: Chapters (3-5) due today!  Next Chapters – 6-7 – due Thursday – there will be a quiz

Argument Speech  Partner share #5 (focus on position, claims, and begin to share what you might use for evidence)  Tonight, focus on writing a rough outline of your speech. Put it in C-E-I structure. Focus on just the body. Don’t think about the introduction or conclusion yet.  What can you use for evidence? Examples from current events/knowledge/affairs, anecdotes, MINIMAL research, etc.  Use your Ethos/Pathos/Logos chart to provide you with ways to use rhetoric in your speech as you gather your evidence/examples.

Visual text Analysis: The optic Approach  What is OPTIC?  OPTIC is an organized approach to read and analyze visual or graphic text closely. There are 5 key elements: 1. Overview 2. Parts 3. Title 4. Interrelationships 5. Conclusion

Optic: Now you try it… Task: Analyze the Waiting for Superman DVD cover using the OPTIC approach.  O verview: Conduct a brief overview of the main subject of the DVD cover.  P arts: Scrutinize the parts of the visual; note any elements or details that seem important.  T itle: Read the title or caption(s) of the visual for added information.  I nterrelationships: Use the words in the title or caption(s) and the individual parts of the visual to determine connections and relationships within the graphic.  C onclusion: Draw a conclusion about the meaning of the visual as a whole. Summarize the message in 1-2 sentences.

Visual Text Analysis: Waiting for Superman  Today, we will be viewing Waiting for Superman, and the goal is to analyze and evaluate the director, Davis Guggenheim’s argument throughout the documentary.  As you watch the documentary, keep track of the use of ethos/pathos/logos and how Guggenheim uses it.
