What are structures? An organism’s structure is the way it is put together—how its parts are arranged to form a whole. An organism’s external structure.

Adaptation Notes: Internal and External Title your page: Adaptation Notes: Internal and External

Adaptation: Anything that helps an organism survive in its environment Internal = INSIDE the organism External = OUTSIDE the organism Behavioral = the way the organism ACTS Structural = an organisms BODY PART

Adaptation Notes: Internal, External, Behavioral Your notes will include the two types of adaptations (internal and external) To organize your notes, write the type of adaptation in the left column, then put a box around it. The background of the slide will change when the type of adaptation notes changes. Adaptation Notes: Internal, External, Behavioral Adaptation: Anything that helps an organism survive in its environment Internal = INSIDE the organism External = OUTSIDE the organism Behavioural = the way the organism ACTS Internal

What is an Internal Adaptation? An inherited trait that helps an organism survive DNA stored in cells (INSIDE the organism)

Examples of Internal Adaptations READ ONLY: GOAL: By the end of this unit, I will be able to… Investigate and explain how internal structures of organisms have adaptations that allow specific functions (job) such as gills in fish, hollow bones in birds, or xylem in plants Examples of Internal Adaptations Gills in Fish Xylem in Plants Hollow bones in Birds

Gills in Fish Internal Structure: Gills Function: Gills are the respiratory (breathing) organs of fish. First, a fish swallows water through its mouth. Then the water flows over the gills. The gills take out oxygen from the water which passes back out of the fish. The oxygen is then absorbed through the capillaries into the blood stream of the fish.

Xylem In Plants Internal Structure: Xylem Function: Part of a plant's vascular system that transports water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant and furnishes support. Xylem are like a straw. The xylem makes up the major part of a stem or root and the wood of a tree.

Xylem In Plants Diagram READ ONLY: You do not need to draw this diagram

Hollow Bones in Birds Internal Structure: --Hollow Bones Function: This makes them light, and a light body allows them to fly faster, using less energy. This is an advantage birds have gained through evolution.

Adaptation Notes: Internal, External, Behavioral Write another box for external adaptations The background of the slide will change when the type of adaptation notes changes Adaptation Notes: Internal, External, Behavioral Adaptation: Anything that helps an organism survive in its environment Internal = INSIDE the organism External = OUTSIDE the organism Behavioural = the way the organism ACTS Internal External

What is an External Adaptation? The ability of living things to adjust to different conditions within their environments (OUTSIDE the organism)  Two forms of external adaptations: Structural adaptation (animal’s body part) Behavioral adaptation (animal’s behavior) READ ONLY: GOAL: By the end of this unit, I will be able to… Explain variation within a population or species by comparing EXTERNAL features, BEHAVIORS, or physiology (function) of organisms that enhance their survival such as migration, hibernation, or storage of food in a bulb

Structural adaptations A structural adaptation involves some part of an animal's body. Shark’s Sharp Teeth Giraffe’s long neck    Duck’s webbed feet Protective coloration (camouflage) A structural adaptation involves some part of an animal's body, such as the size or shape of the teeth, the animal's body covering, or the way the animal moves.   Teeth - since different animals eat different things, they don't all have the same kind of teeth Body coverings - Hair, scales, spines, and feathers grow from the skin.  All of these parts help animals survive in their environments.   Movement - animals find food by moving from place to place

Protective Coloration (camouflage) Protective coloration and resemblance allow an animal to blend into its environment.  This camouflage makes it hard for enemies to single out individuals and increases the chance of survival.

Behavioral Adaptation A behavioral adaptation involves the way an animal acts to enhance its survive or reproduction. Mimicry Migration Hibernation Behavior adaptations can be learned or instinctive.

Mimicry Mimicry allows one animal to look, sound, or act like another animal to fool predators into thinking it is poisonous or dangerous.   Coral snake (left) very poinsonous & Milk snake (right)

Migration Animals migrate for different reasons. Migration is a behavioral adaptation that involves an animal or group of animals moving from one region to another and then back again.  Animals migrate for different reasons.  better climate better food safe place to live safe place to raise young go back to the place they were born. Migration-is the behavioral adaptation that involves an animal or group of animals moving from one region to another and then back again.  Animals migrate for different reasons.  The reasons are as follows. better climate better food safe place to live safe place to raise young go back to the place they were born.

Hibernation This is deep sleep in which animal’s body temperature drops, body activities are slowed to conserve energy. Ex: Bats, woodchucks & bears. Hibernation- is a deep sleep in which an animal's body temperature drops to about the temperature of the environment.  Body activities, such as heartbeat and breathing are slowed causing the animal to need very little food.  Animals that hibernate are  bats  woodchucks snakes  bears. During the hibernation the animals live off of the fat that is stored in their body.

Draw this diagram into your notes.

ASSIGNMENT: In your notebook, write each example ASSIGNMENT: In your notebook, write each example. Then, determine if the following are internal or external adaptations. EXPLAIN WHY. If it is external, is it structural or behavioral? Fish fins for swimming Brown bug on brown wood Skunk scent Xylem Giraffe’s long neck Birds flying south during winter Turtle shell acts as it’s home Cow’s two compartment stomach Gills in fish
