H OW CAN STI’ S BE CONTRACTED ? Which one has the highest risk of transmitting STI’s? Vaginal penetrative sex Anal penetrative sex Oral sex Sex toys Anal penetrative sex
Caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia Trachomatis found in the semen of men and vaginal fluids of women. Can be caught by having unprotected sex with someone with the infection, or sharing sex toys with an infected person. Symptoms include: Unusual discharge from vagina or penis Pain when passing urine Burning, itching sensation Lower abdominal (pelvic) pain Important to get tested as it can cause long – term health problems including infertility. Genital warts Caused by a virus HPV Herpes Simplex virus HSV – 1 Causes cold sores and genital warts HSV -2 Causes Herpes on the genitals Often no symptoms Once you get it you have it for life Can be passed on as occasionally the virus is present in the genital area
Syphilis Bacterial infection Passed from infected mother to unborn child Stage one – painless but highly infectious sore on genitals or around the mouth Stage two – skin rash and sore throat Stage three- serious damage to the body Usually treated with penicillin
Gonorrhea STD Sexually transmitted disease Bacteria that lives and grows in warm moist areas such as the reproductive tract Transmitted through the penis, mouth, anus or vagina Symptoms in men can include; burning sensation when urinating white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis. Symptoms in women can consist of; Painful or burning sensation when urinating Increased vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding between periods
