Workers rights Working in factories was noisy, unsafe, and boring so workers began demanding better conditions. They started a labor union, a group of workers who band together to get what they want. Sometimes they would strike, stopping work until they got better working conditions.
Improving Education/ Horace Mann Horace Mann first head of the state board of education. Because of him most northern states had public schools by More private colleges were being founded, but most women and African Americans could not attend. It was hard for African Americans to go to college because only a few were educated. Also most colleges wouldn’t accept them.
Dorothea Dix/ Mentally ill Dorothea Dix- Dorothea Dix was a reformer who created 32 mental hospitals in the United States. She had found that the mentally ill were being ignored rather than receiving treatment. The government didn’t care about how mentally ill people were treated so she went across America getting people to realize how unfair they were being treated.
Spreading ideas through print Penny paper was very popular in the 1830s because most people could afford it. Penny papers were news papers that only use to cost 1 cent and gave news on crimes and fires or what ever else was going on. Magazines were also popular. They told people how to live and gave new ideas on how to do everyday things.
Creating ideal communities Some people, instead of trying to change according to magazines, decided to start over and make an ideal community called a utopian society. They tried this in New Harmony, Indiana and Brook Farm, Massachusetts. They ended because of financial difficulties. Other utopias started because of religious beliefs such as Shakers. The Shakers made they’re community work because they worked so well together and refused to fight.
