Symbiosis and Plant Nutrition With Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria: MUTUALISM! Plants need Nitrogen to grow, and even through Earth’s atmosphere is 78% Nitrogen, plants cannot absorb it from the air in that form. Some bacteria in the soil however, are able to convert the nitrogen from the air into a usable mineral that plants can absorb into their roots.

Symbiosis and Plant Nutrition With Fungus Mycorrhizae: MUTUALISM! Certain soil fungi will lend a hand with their “fungus roots”. Plants supply them with a steady stream of sugar and the fungi help increase the plant’s nutrient absorption. Mycorrhizae also secrete growth factors that stimulate roots to grow and branch.

The function of the digestive system is to break down food so that it can be used to make energy in your body. The system consists of a series of complex organs that secrete hydrolytic enzymes which break down food into small usable particles for your cells.

Mechanical Digestion: -food is broken down mechanically, with movement Ex: Teeth Chemical Digestion: -food is broken down with a chemical or enzyme Ex: Saliva What systems work with the digestive system here?

Digestion begins in the mouth. As you chew your food, two processes are occurring: 1.TEETH- your teeth begin mechanical digestion by breaking down food into smaller pieces. 2.SALIVARY AMYLASE- this enzyme helps break down starches chemically The mouth completes both mechanical and chemical digestion!

The stomach churns food (mechanical) AND bathes it in acidic gastric juice (chemical). The nutrients are not absorbed into the bloodstream here…

The liquid chyme is the transported to the small intestine. It is a narrow muscular tube about 6 meters long, lined with villi.

Bile and other enzymes are injected into the Small Intestine to further break down the food. Bile from the liver and multiple pancreatic enzymes are released here to further digestion.

Villi- finger-like extensions filled with capillaries that absorb nutrients into the blood stream Villus expand surface area of SI.

Then absorbed into the bloodstream as monomers
