Imagine… An “ideal child care” facility: Low teacher to student ratios Developmentally appropriate practices Posted emergency plans Written policies and procedures 100% SAFE! How can you create this?

Indoor and Outdoor Safety Many things to consider, such as space, furnishings/equipment, building security, maintenance Age and developmental-appropriateness need to be considered for activity spaces and equipment indoors and outdoors Constant SUPERVISION is a must! Excellent safety checklist on p of textbook!

“Unintentional Injuries” Has replaced term “accidents” “ Infants and toddlers are at highest risk for sustaining life-threatening injuries and medical emergencies” (Marotz, 223) Why? What can we do about this?

Risk Management Safety must underlie everything we do with children Advanced Planning Establish Rules Quality Supervision Safety Education (Marotz, pp )

Implementing Safety Practices Toys and equipment Classroom activities Field trips Class pets Personal safety (Marotz, pp )

Seminar question 1: What foods/items in children's environment pose a particular choking hazard to children under 3 years of age? What measures can adults take to improve safety during mealtimes and while selecting toys?

Seminar Question 2: What hazards to children's safety can you identify in your own house or apartment and what can you do to correct these potential safety hazards if you were to care for you children in your home? If you have small children and hazards were previously identified, what did you do to correct the potential safety hazards?

Wrap-up quote: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” - William Butler Yeats
