英语写作,水平 1 基础写作 Fundamental Writing Unit 6 How to Review a Paper? 激扬文字

Classroom management In this class, we are going to do four things –Watch an interesting priming courseware We Were Born Reviewers –Professor’s lecture –Classroom discussion –Task description

An interesting priming courseware Now let us watch an interesting priming courseware so that we can move to Professor’s Lecture more smoothly –We Were Born Reviewers

Major points in Professor’s Lecture In this lecture, we are going to talk about the following three things –Introduction 破题立论 –Four important factors 评议四要素 –Attack strategies 应对策略

Introduction It is not an easy job to write a book review. It is more difficult if you want to write a good review in English. But the question is that review writing is so important that we should not miss it. By introducing this writing task, we emphasize the relationships between reading and writing in your English learning (读写结合,以读促写). When you review, you have two roles to play: –First, as a Decoder ( 解码者 ) or Reader who wants to know something about the source work –Second, as an Encoder ( 编码者 ) or writer who wants to say something about the source work

Four important factors “Any quick knack (诀窍) for this task?”, you may ask. What we put below are some basic rules for your review writing (如何评议) –Introduce a proposition (提出命题) at the very beginning of your paper so that you need not to beat about the bush (直奔主 题,避免罗嗦) –Take a position (表明立场) in your discussion so that you can write a tighter and more relevant review (简洁相关,避免空谈) –Summarize both strong and weak points (总结优劣) so that you can give a complete picture of the work you review (客观中 肯,言之有物). –If you like, you may add a conclusion to make your review more professional (专业化).

Attack strategies Go to your textbook or the writing database and read some good review papers (阅读英语书评) When you read, please pay enough attention to these important things –Their perspectives 评议视角 –Their language style 语言风格 –Their format 文本格式

Classroom discussion Here are some suggested questions for you to think about –Book reviews are scholars’ patent (专利). Is it true or false? –Book reviews can be your personal judgment of something you have read. Is this true or false? –As university students, we do not need experts to tell us how to read a book. Are you for this proposition or against it?

Task description Choose a book that you are familiar with, and write a review piece about it. Or you can write a review for any of these “spiritual products” (精神 产品) : –Our textbook—Experience English Writing; –Any of your own papers composed before; –An impressive novel; –A touching movie; –A favorite music work; –Or any other things you would like to review.

Summary In this unit, we have –enjoyed an interesting story: We Were Born Reviewers –realized the relationships between reading and writing in our English learning –known four important factors in review writing –learned some attack strategies for this writing task –had a nice discussion –described the writing task for this unit
