Welsh Public Health Conference 2013 October 2013 Anglesey County Council NERS - Lifestyle Management Programme

NERS Lifestyle Management Programme The programme is aimed at people who may require a hip or knee replacement who are overweight with a BMI of over 35. With the multi-disciplinary team of a physiotherapist, dietician and exercise professional they hope once people complete the 32 week programme of exercise and diet they will be healthier and fitter. Some of the individuals might still require surgery in the future but by becoming fitter and losing weight they are less likely to suffer post operative complications and some might not require the surgery at all following the programme.

Case Study Patient A Referred on to Anglesey NERS Lifestyle Management Programme initial weight 169.8kg and a BMI of suffering with knee pain due to arthritis. Began exercising twice a week from November 2012 and attending 8 week dietetic programme at the leisure centre before one of his gym sessions.

Progress Patient A decided to increase his weekly exercise sessions from twice a week to 4-5 sessions a week and after 16 weeks had already lost 15kg bringing his weight down to 154.6kg and BMI Patient A began training for a Sprint Triathlon which he had never done before and began swimming weekly along with his structured gym programme with the physiotherapist and exercise professional.

Success Patient A successfully completed the Pwllheli Sprint Triathlon (400m swim, 12 mile cycle & 3 mile run) in March 2013 achieving his goal! Patient A has now completed the 32 weeks on the Lifestyle programme and lost 24.8kg brining his weight down to 145kg and BMI His knee pain had reduced and enabled his to take part in his 2 nd triathlon in August 2013 in Llanrwst. Patient A has now become a member of the leisure centre and attends 3-4 times a week to help continue his weight loss.
