Mrs. Whalen’s Kindergarten Math Lesson #44: Creating shapes from shapes
Daily Practice!
Using the ten frame, find out what number is missing from our equation. 3 + ? = 10
First we fill in what we know. We know we have 3 out of ? = 10
The empty boxes represent our missing number. 3 + ? = 10
3 + 7 = 10
Using 10 objects find the missing number from the equation 2 + ? = 10.
First we need to take away from the group what we know we have. We know we have 2 out of ? = 10.
Now we count what we have left and that is our missing number. 2 + ? = 10.
2 + 8 = 10
Good Job!!
Lesson
Sometimes we can use smaller shapes to make larger shapes.

Let’s try making a square with 2 triangles.
By moving the triangles we can make a square.
How many small triangles will it take to make on large triangle?
Let’s move triangles over to see how many small triangles make a large triangle.
1 32
For the last 3 spaces we have to turn the triangles upside down
It took 9 small triangles to fill up the large triangle

Let’s make a house together. You help me. You draw a house using shapes on your paper with me. First let’s start with a square.
Next draw a triangle on top. This will be the roof.
Next draw a rectangle in the middle of the bottom of the square. This will be the door.
Now draw two circles. They will be bushes in the front of the house.
Now draw two squares. They will be windows on the front of the house.
Now draw a small rectangle. That will be the chimney on top of the house.
We made a house out of shapes!
