This article is about how to incorporate literacy into Science and Math classes. This author gave examples of how you are able to teach vocabulary without having the students look up the words in a dictionary or textbook.
I found this statement to be interesting because it shows that literacy is not just having the students read or write, but also understanding symbols as well, which goes hand and hand with Math.
This section gave me helpful tools that I can implement into my classroom. One example they gave was Semantic feature analysis, which helped the student learn vocabulary. With this graph, it allows the student to compare terms to each other and shows the student how they relate to each other.
This section shows you how you can incorporate comprehension into your classroom. One example that it gave was key concept synthesis. This chart helps the student to organize the most important ideas or concepts within the text they are reasoning and then putting it into their own words.
This section shows how to incorporate writing strategies into teaching. One example that I found interesting was Write and toss. This lesson has the students write an answer to a question that the teacher poses. After the students write their answer, they wad up their paper and toss it around for 15 seconds and then individually read aloud what the paper says and then goes over what was misunderstood. This helps the students learn without calling a student out.
