TIME MANAGEMENT: One of the Key Components to Being a Successful Online Student Unit 2

You CAN and WILL succeed! Failure is NOT an option because you have the tools to succeed at any goal that you set for yourself! I believe in your success!! Do you? Believe in yourself…

Welcome to the Unit 2 seminar! Unit 2 begins on Wednesday and ends with all Unit 2 assignments being due by Tuesday at 12:00 midnight ET. Remember…each Kaplan week ‘runs’ from Wednesday until Tuesday. Schedule your time to complete assignments accordingly so that you complete all assignments by Tuesday. Remember that the goal is for EVERYONE to earn an “A”. We are in this together an we must stick together !

Keep in mind… Instructor’s Name: Call me “Cliff” (Clifford Marsh) Phone #: (803) Unit 2 Assignments: 1. Seminar (you are currently in seminar) 2. Unit 2 CJ Reporter 3. LASSI for Learning Online (take the assessment) 4. Hands-On Activity (discuss results of LASSI assessment in essay format and submit to the DROPBOX)

Unit 2 Seminar: 30 points You are currently in the Unit 2 seminar, so you will receive credit for your attendance in seminar. “Scratch” this off of your ‘to-do’ list for Unit 2.

Unit 2 CJ Reporter: 35 points ~ Go to the Unit 2 CJ Reporter link in the course room. ~ View the video and answer these three questions in a posting of 100 words minimum: 1. Given that you are unlikely to remember everything that witnesses say, what strategies would you use to make sure you remember and document all of the relevant information? 2. How might the witnesses’ responses be affected by their own memory? 3. Why are skills such as time management and organization important to the investigation?

LASSI Assessment for Learning Online: 20 points You will see a link entitled, LASSI Assessment of Learning Online under the orange Unit 2: Online Success tab in the course room. Click on the link that says Click Here To Take The LASSI Assessment Once you have completed the assessment, copy and paste your results so that you can refer to it so that you can complete the “Hands On Activity” assignment.

Hands-On Activity: 50 points You will see the specific instructions on how to complete this assignment under the orange Unit 2: Online success tab in the course room. The link is called, “Hands On Activity”. Hands-On Activity is a written essay that you will submit in MICROSOFT WORD to the Drop box. In Units 2, 4, 5, and 9 you will have written assignments that will be submitted to the Drop box. These Drop box assignments (or written assignments) must be typed in MICROSOFT WORD.

Hands On Activity: Unit 2 In Microsoft WORD, you are going to interpret your results from the LASSI for Learning Online Assessment. You will take your results that you receive after completing the assessment and write a two-paragraph essay that answers these questions: How will these results help you accomplish your academic goals? Select two of your results and discuss how they will help you succeed as a student. Lastly, discuss your chosen career path and how you think your LASSI results might apply.

Keep in mind… LASSI for Learning Online Assessment MUST be done before completing the Hands On Activity. Once you have completed the assessment and have completed your Hands On Activity essay, you will submit your Hands On Activity essay to the Dropbox as a MICROSOFT WORD attachment. The Dropbox is located next to the Doc Sharing tab in the course room. Click on Dropbox and in the scroll-down menu (basket), highlight Unit 2: Hands On Activity to attach your assignment and send.

DROPBOX You will submit your Unit 2: Hands On Activity assignment to the DROPBOX. You will not submit your Unit 2: Hands On Activity to the Doc Sharing tab in the course room. Doc Sharing is only used for submitting alternate seminar assignments (when a seminar is missed).

DROPBOX vs. Doc Sharing DROPBOX: Submit your written assignments in Units 2, 4, 5, and 9 Doc Sharing: If you miss a seminar, you will submit your alternate seminar assignment (essay) to Doc Sharing.

Clarification of Unit 2 Assignments Unit 2 Seminar (**you are already here**) Unit 2 CJ Reporter Unit 2: LASSI for Learning Online Assessment (follow the instructions within this link in the course room to complete). Unit 2: Hands On Activity (This is the essay that is completed AFTER you have completed the LASSI for Learning Online Assessment).

Unit 2 Success If you get confused on how to complete Unit 2 assignments, please go to the Doc Sharing tab in the course room to download the document entitled, “How To Successfully Complete Unit 2 Assignments”. You can also listen to this seminar again tomorrow and look at this PowerPoint that I will post in the Doc Sharing tab of our CJ 100 course room. Check your Kaplan daily. Read the course room announcements

If you have not done so… Understand that the ‘key’ to online learning is following instructions very carefully. Please go to the orange Unit 2 tab in the course room and review all of the links under Unit 2: Online Success. Download the document in Doc Sharing entitled, “How To Successfully Complete Unit 2 Assignments”. Follow this document word-for-word so that you successfully complete all assignments.

Seminar Rules Participate by providing your respectful thoughts/ideas. You must attend most of the entire seminar to receive credit. If you do not attend seminar, then it is your responsibility to complete the alternate seminar assignment discussed under the Seminars link for Unit 2. Have fun and learn, learn, learn !!!!!!

What do you do if you miss a seminar? Don’t panic or have an anxiety attack. It’s okay… Simply go to the unit that we are studying (Unit ___) in the course room Go to the Seminar link and read this link Write a 300-word essay, based upon the topics identified within this link, and submit to the DOCSHARING section of the course room. That’s it:)………………….

Do we complete the alternate seminar assignment if we attend seminar? NO You will only complete an alternate seminar assignment IF you miss a seminar.

When is seminar? Seminar will be held each and every week at the same time. Try to log in fifteen minutes early. The seminar room will not be open until 30 minutes before the start of seminar. You are graded on your attendance in seminar.

Class Dialogue (1) What was most challenging about Unit 1? (2) What was most stressful about Unit 1? (3) What were the ‘not so bad’ moments about Unit 1? (4) What strategies assisted you in completing the assignments for Unit 1? (5) Looking back on Unit 1, what would you have done differently? Take this time to get to know one another and to discuss your perceptions of Unit 1 and to offer each other advice. I will reconvene with the audio at exact 8:20 pm ET !

Time Management (1) What is your personal definition of ‘time management’? (2) How do you successfully ‘juggle’ your personal and professional obligations WITH completing your online academic assignments? (3) TIP : Online learning means that you must develop a personalized time management plan. This means that you must develop a plan that is conducive to your needs WHILE completing all assignments successfully and on time. What are your thoughts to this successful tip?

Unit 2: Time Management All Kaplan weeks begin on Wednesday, with all assignments due on Tuesday of each week by midnight ET. TIP #1: Do not get overwhelmed! It’s okay and you will do fine …Always focus on one week at a time. Once you have completed your assignments for the previous week, glance through the next unit to get a grasp of the general expectations for the next week. TIP #2: Check the course announcements AND your Kaplan daily. I will send tips for your success periodically throughout the week.

Unit 2: Time Management Continued. Tip #3: Ask questions when you are unsure. If you are unsure about how to use various technological software OR the course room, contact Tech Support 24/7. They are EXCELLENT with guiding you through the step-by-step processes of feeling more comfortable with the online environment. Tip #4: Be confident in yourself and know that you will be successful. NEVER give up. Understand that there will be difficult moments, so identify a consistent support system that will help you to persevere and to succeed. Count me in as a member of your support system throughout your program!

Final Project: Please start thinking about who you are going to interview… You will have to find a criminal justice or law enforcement professional to interview. You will be interviewing 1 person. The person can be actively working as a criminal justice or law enforcement professional OR retired. You will need to have a good idea of who you will interview by Unit 5. It would be best to know by Unit 4 so that we can complete the simple proposal as a class in Unit 4…

CJ 100 Final Project You will be interviewing a criminal justice professional (that is approved by me). Between now and Unit 5, please decide what criminal justice professional you will be interviewing. Step 1: We will complete a very simple three-part proposal in Unit 5. Step 2: You will interview the professional. Step 3: By the end of Unit 9, you will write the 3 page essay, based upon your findings from your interview. We will talk about the requirements for your final project in Unit 4.

That’s All Folks ….. Questions? My OR call me (803) (12 noon ET- 10 pm ET, 7 days a If you are having difficulties with technology or understanding how to maneuver the online learning environment, go to the Kaplan homepage and watch the CAMPUS TOUR. Then, if you have questions, contact Tech Support at (Choose Option 2 and then Option 1) You can catch me on AIM (Screen name: cbm3110) on Sundays between 8pm ET and 10 pm ET if you have any questions.
