What is Digital Media TechnologyMultimedia Digital Media Technology is the term first associated with computer use in the classroom Multimedia incorporates a variety of elements, including text, graphics, audio, video and animation Technologies that allow users to create new forms of interaction, expression, communication and entertainment. These terms are not mutually exclusive. They often are used interchangeably. Digital Media uses all the elements of multimedia, but in a digital format.

Digital Media Software  Refers to any computer-based presentation or application software that uses multimedia elements.  Includes interaction, some, not all is considered interactive digital media.  The components, or elements, of digital media software are: text, graphics, animation, audio, and video.

Interactive Digital Media  Allows users to move through information at their own pace.  Accepts input from the user by means of keyboard, voice, simple movements, or a pointing device, such as a mouse, and performs an action in response.  In most cases you navigate through the content by clicking links.  Any clickable object can function as a link – text, graphics, animation, video.

Text  Characters that are used to create words, sentences, and paragraphs.  A fundamental element used in all multimedia and digital media applications.

Graphics  A digital representation of nontext information, such as a drawing, chart, or photograph.  Contains no movement or animation.  Graphics can illustrate content more vividly than text.  They play an important role in the learning process for visual learners.  Graphics can be used as buttons for links.

Animation  A graphic that has the illusion of motion.  Can be simple motion or contain complex motions.  Conveys information more vividly than text alone.  Can illustrate working relationships.  The use of animation has improved the quality of educational software.

Audio  Any music, speech, or other sound.  Allows you to bring content to life.  Music can be embedded into software in several different ways.  The most common audio formats found on the internet are MP3 and WAV.

Video  Visual frames played back at speeds of 15 to 60 seconds per frame.  Video has significantly influenced the way students learn core subjects.  Videos can reinforce lectures and readings, provide a common base of knowledge, and show things that students would not otherwise experience.

Audio Streaming and Video Streaming Audio streaming and video streaming allow you to listen to audio and view video while it downloads to your computer, instead of you having to download then play back. This saves time and computer storage.

Digital Media Applications Digital media application involves the use of digital media technology in education, business, and entertainment.

Virtual Reality  The use of a computer to create an artificial environment that appears and feels like a real environment and allows you to explore space and manipulate the setting.  Appears to be 3 dimensional.  Can be used for simulations or virtual field trips. K-12 Educational Software Applications Categories  Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI)  Drill and Practice Software  Educational Games  Tutorials  Educational Simulations  Integrated Learning Systems  Curriculum-Specific Educational Software Educational software application are computer software products used to support teaching and learning of subject-related content.

Computer Assisted Instruction  Software designed to help teach facts, information, and/or skills associated with subject-related materials.  Using a computer to enhance instruction Click on graphics for interactive websites. These are examples of computer assisted instruction on the web.

Drill and Practice Software  Supplies factual information and then through repetitive exercises allows students to work on specific materials to remember or memorize information.  Students receive instant feedback on correct or incorrect answers.  Usually has built in features that move students to the next level.  Can improve performance for students in areas in which they are weak. Tutorials  A teaching program designed to help individuals learn to use a product or concepts.  Allows students to excel at their own pace.  Provides feedback and remediation when needed.

Integrated Learning Systems  A sophisticated software system designed to be a complete educational software solution in one package.  They provide student diagnostic data, progress monitoring, adjusts instruction as needed, and a variety of formats for teaching content.  Provides for management of student data. Examples: PLATO Learning, Renaissance Learning, CompassLearning, and Pearson Digital Learning.
