The theme for this project is STORAGE. You should try to identify where you have a storage NEED at home. Areas where you could investigate could be: Kitchen Garden shed Garage Bathroom Bedroom Utility room etc Storage products help to keep things: organised for easy access protected from damage The objects to be stored can be all the same E.g. CD’s or related E.g. Cooking utensils. Design Brief
Write out the design needs and briefs. The design brief should be a number of sentences that describe the NEED and BRIEF Examples: NEED: My Mum and Dad when cooking have problems finding the stirring spoons, spatulas and other equipment when using the cooker. BRIEF: Design and make a storage unit to keep all the most popular cooking tools handy by the cooker. Task 1
Now you have identified your design brief and users needs, you now need to identify specific requirements, i.e. Cost, size, materials available ……… Research Task 2 Using ACCESSFMM write down the specific requirements of your client.
In order to help you with ideas for your design you now need to research existing products and identify areas for improvement and key areas that make the product a success. Find images of at least 4 existing products and identify areas for improvement and key areas that make the product a success for each product. Research Task 3
Now you have spoken to your client and researched similar products you can now write a specification for each of the following headings explaining why each factor is important to your design.. USER Which market/user is the product for ? FUNCTION What must your product do? COST. What will be the max cost of your product LOCATION Where will the product be used. MATERIALS What material(s) will be used in the product. STYLE What style (modern, funky, old fashioned) will your product have. FEATURES What other features will your product have Specification and Constraints Task 4
This work should be completed on A3 paper. Generate as many ideas as you can think of, making sure you use annotations to identify key design features, ie; materials, joining methods, links to clients requirements etc.… Generate Ideas Task 5
Choose your favourite design an draw it out using colour and annotations indicating your clients requirements Development – Task 6
Using the programme Google sketch-up draw out your final design, and model it. Extension; - Draw all or part of the environment the design will be situated in. Modelling – Task 7
Using your specification evaluate how effective your final design is against each point. Evaluation – Task 8
