Accelerated Learning-Moving Ahead CCBC Developmental Math to College Algebra Kate Abromaitis and Kathy Baranoski Community College of Baltimore County June 17, 2016

Integrated Math Courses  Math 081- Pre-Algebra ◦ Lowest Level Developmental Math Course ◦ No credit course  Math 082- Introductory Algebra ◦ Developmental Math Course ◦ No credit course  Math 083- Intermediate Algebra ◦ Developmental Math Course ◦ No credit course  Math 163 – College Algebra ◦ 3 Credit General Education Math Course

In the Spring of 2010 we started integrating our developmental courses with our College Algebra Credit Course. We plan on adding two more AMP courses in the future: Spring 2010  5 sections offered  2 sections 081/082  1 section 082/083  2 sections 083/163 Fall 2016  33 sections offered  16 sections 081/082  Not Offered 082/083  17 sections 083/163 Introductory Algebra (082) paired with Stats (153) Introductory Algebra (082) paired with Finite Math and Modeling (125)

Class Information  The classes are open for all students, no restrictions.  Each student must sign up for two three-credit courses, the lower and higher integrated course.  The students can not drop one without dropping the other.  The professor must give a separate grade for each course.  The topics for each course are integrated.  The student only has to buy the upper level textbook.

Math 081/082 Pre-Algebra/Introductory Algebra

Math 081/082 Basic Mathematics and Introductory Algebra Integrated topics are in bold below  Math 081 Topics o Arithmetic of Integers o Arithmetic of Rational Numbers o Decimals o Simplifying Expressions o Solving Equations o Ratio and Proportions o Percents o Word problems o Averages, Conversions, and Graphs  Math 082 Topics o Arithmetic of Rational Numbers o Algebra of Rational Numbers o Solving Equations with Rational Numbers o Formula Evaluation o Defining Slope and Graphing Linear Equations o Solving Systems of Linear Equations o Exponents and Scientific Notation o Multiplying Polynomial Expressions o Factoring o Solving Quadratic E quations by Factoring

My Class Set Up  Class meets two days a week for three hours  There is a timed 12 minute quiz at the beginning of each class  Two topics are taught each class.  Each Lecture is minutes long with a 20 minute group activity after every lecture  Each class ends 20 minutes early for questions.

Grading Policy for all Developmental Courses  A minimum of 85% of each student’s grade must be determined by proctored exams or quizzes without the use of notes or book.  This means that homework, in-class assignments, projects, take-home exams, etc. may account for no more than 15% of the final grade.  All final exams for developmental courses, 081/082/083 are 30% of the student’s final grade. This is a college wide policy for all developmental courses. There is a common cumulative final exam.

My Math 081/082 Requirements Math 081/082 REQUIREMENTS Tests 55%: There will be six chapter tests throughout the semester. There is be an 081 and an 082 portion on each of the first three tests. Each part will be graded separately and recorded under the appropriate class grade. Test 4 is strictly 081 material and will finish the 081 course. Test 5 and 6 are strictly 082 material Quizzes 15%: There will be a quiz at the beginning of each class. I will drop your two lowest Math 081 and your two lowest Math 082 quiz grades at the end of the semester. There are no make up quizzes! If you are absent for a quiz, that quiz will be one of the dropped quizzes at the end of the semester. Quizzes are given during the first 15 minutes of class. If you are late and miss the quiz, this will be one of your dropped quizzes. Final Exam 30%: Math 081 GRADING POLICY A 100%-90% B 89%-80% C 79%-70% F Below 70% Math 082 Grading policy A 100%-90% B 89%-80% C 79%-70% F Below 70% or F in Math 081

Tests and Final Exams  Tests ◦ There is an 081 and 082 portion on each of the first three tests ◦ The test is usually two pages ◦ The first page is the 081 portion of the test and the second page is the 082 portion ◦ Calculators can be used on the test ◦ Test 4 is strictly 081 material and will finish the 081 course. Test 5 and 6 are strictly 082 material  Final Exams o Students take a separate common final exam for each course. o The Math 081 final exam is given five weeks prior to the end of the semester when all the 081 material has been taught o The Math 082 final exam is given during final exam week

 Is an AMP class right for you? o Double the Money o Double time spent on homework and studying o Is this your first time taking the developmental course? o Can not withdraw from one class without withdrawing from the other o If you fail both classes, you may not be eligible for financial aid. o Discuss with students what other options are available if they want out of AMP Day 1: Class Discussion

 At the end of the semester the students are asked to complete a form, “Advice to Future Students”. 1. What was your favorite part about this combined course? 2. What was your least favorite part about this combined course? 3. What advice would you give the future students of this combined class?  I put these forms on the desks the next semester for students to read before I start my day 1 discussion. Advice to Future Students
