What was the downfall of Julius Caesar? After many military victories, he started trying to control all important public offices. At one point, he became the ONLY consul and would eventually declare himself “dictator for life.” Although he tried to include the Senate, the senators thought he was trying to be King (which meant destroying the Republic) and assassinated him on March 15, 44 BC.
What did Augustus do for Rome? He ruled during the Pax Romana He ordered the building of new roads, buildings and water systems He created a single system of government and money He provided them with police and fire protection
How was he rewarded? He was rewarded for the peace and prosperity he brought to Rome. The Republic practically handed him their power. He would become the first Emperor of Rome.
