Researching for Increase  The first step in prospect research is to gather all useful known information about the prospect donor.  It starts with basic biographical information — name, address and other contact information  It continues to social and political information — clubs, churches, political, even personal interests, when it can be obtained from a volunteer.  Then there is financial information  Finally, is there other philanthropy? 3

Institutional Giving? 4  Foundations, Corporate and Government Funders 1. To develop and implement a strategy for researching and securing funding from new institutional funding sources 2. Your NGO/NPO must be goal-oriented, pro-active approach, able to think both strategically and concretely 3. writing effective proposals and reports  Identifying and Managing Institutional Donors 1. Prospect research to identify and prioritize potential institutional grants  Networking with NGOs/Resource Mobilization Means

Types of Research  EDUCATE YOUR TEAM Desktop Research: Research the Donor Database  On-line Research: Using Internet: Directories / libraries/ Government Websites, Charity Commission  Offline Research: NGOs network/ Newspapers/ Donors Publications, CSR Directories, Consultancy agencies  Creating a database of funding agencies  Dos: Data collection, copyright and data protection  Donors Cultivation 5

Start-up Work  Identifying a project idea  Looking for a potential funder  Studying priorities, guidelines and application forms / previously funded projects  Establishing initial contact (NGO’s vision, mission strategy, structure, team)  Creating partnerships (now or earlier) 6

Approaching A Donor  Send a requesting letter to the donor for funding  First you introduce your organization to the Donor  Bring about a nexus between your goal and focus of the Donor. If you contact a healthy funding agency for an Agriculture project will be rejected  Arouse an interest in the Donor as to what you are doing; help them to feel that the problem that you are attempting to deal with will have a global effect. Therefore, the giving is legitimized and the action becomes mutually beneficial.  Explain how important that your project is needed for a change.  Explain about the accountability of the project, specially fiscal matters 7
