THE UNITED STATES ENTERS WORLD WAR II How it happened, why it happened, and what FDR did next.

Lend-Lease FDR created the Lend- Lease program in which the United States could sell weapons to Britain and France with the justification that they would later “give them back” no intention of getting them back, a move to gain public support as well as Congressional backing

The Atlantic Charter August 1941, Roosevelt signs the Atlantic Charter with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Solidifies friendship and formalizes alliance. This came after Battle of Britain and Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union. Listed 8 common principles that both nations would enforce post war. The United States population did NOT like this.

THE AXIS POWERS Germany and Japan

THE BIG THREE Great Britain, The United States and the Soviet Union (eventually)

THE UNITED STATES WAS ALL BUT FORMALLY DECLARED IN THE EUROPEAN WAR, AND THEN…

JAPAN ATTACKED PEARL HARBOR A naval base in Hawaii was air-raided by Japanese Kamikaze planes

A DATE WHICH WILL LIVE IN INFAMY

Reasons for Japanese Attack The embargo: resentful that the United States did not place one on Germany as well. Needed resources the embargo cut 90 percent of Japan’s oil supply. Resentful of not being invited to Versailles. Tired of America being “bullies”

The United States formally declares war The United States declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941 Hitler then declares war on the United States, and we reciprocate on December 11, 1941

HOW DOES THE UNITED STATES MOBILIZE FOR WAR?
