History Unsure who invented soccer Result of an evolution of sports which were played thousands of years ago Game emerged as a modern sport around 1863 in England. British then took soccer across the world in the early 20th century In 1904 FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), the international soccer's governing body was created.

Soccer The game is played with 11 players on each team. Each team has a goalie ◦Allowed to hold the ball with their hands (Only in the goalie area) The game is played with one ball ranging in sizes from 3 – 5. Teenagers and adults play with a size 5 ball.

Soccer positions Goalie This person protects the goal with any part of his/her body, especially his hands. Defense/Fullbacks This position defends/guards their goal. They are charged with stopping anyone from scoring without causing a penalty.  Right back  First stopper  Last stopper  Left back Midfielders/Halfbacks This position plays defense and forward.  Right wing  Center mid/left  Left wing Forwards/Strikers This position is responsible for scoring goals for their team. These players are usually skillful with the ball, fast, and aggressive goal scorers.  Right forward  Center forward  Left forward

Soccer Rules Offensive Team (Team with the ball) If the ball is kicked out of the sidelines, it will be a Throw in for the other team. If the ball is kicked outside the goal line by the defending team on the defensive side of the field it is a Corner kick for the offensive team. If the ball is kicked outside the goal line by the offensive team it is a Goal kick. The goalie or a defensive player may kick the ball.

Soccer Rules At the start of the game two forward players will pass the ball forward to begin play from center field. NO other player is allowed in the center field circle at that time. The referee determines the magnitude of a foul and will award a free kick, indirect kick, Penalty, a yellow card or red card to the team or player that causes the infraction.

Soccer rules Foul- any infraction committed by a player. Free kick- team is given possession of the ball at the point of infraction. Other team must be 10 yds. away from the ball. Indirect kick- the ball must be kicked/touched by two players before a goal can be scored. Penalty – An infraction which occurs within the 18 yds box. It is defended by the goalie and Kicked by one player uninterrupted. Yellow card – an infraction that is considered dangerous play on the field. Two yellow cards in one game will result in the player being ejected from the game. Red card – an infraction that is considered intentional and or dangerous. Player is ejected from the game and will have to miss the next match.

Soccer rules Throw in – putting the ball back into play by throwing the ball. The ball must be thrown from directly over the head with both feet remaining on the ground. Corner kick- ball is kicked from the furthest corner on the side the ball was kicked out. There is no offsides on a corner. Goal kick- offensive team starts with the ball with a kick from the goalie or defender spotted on the corner of the 6 yd. box. Offsides- when an offensive player moves to receive the ball behind the last defender before the ball is played.

Soccer rules Goalie – goalie has 6 seconds to drop kick, throw or kick the ball back into play. Dribbling – moving the ball with your feet. Heading - hitting the ball with your head. Trapping – stopping the ball with your feet. Joggling – keeping the ball up with your feet. Every time a goal is scored the play begins at the center of the field by team that received the goal (Defending team). The same as the beginning of the game.

Soccer formations Defensive and Offensive Strategies. Here is a few common strategies used by teams.  – 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, 2 forwards.  Standard formation played by many teams.  – 4 defenders, 3 midfielders, 3 forwards.  Moderately aggressive formation, used to have more attacking power.  – 4 defenders, 2 midfielders, 4 forwards.  Aggressive formation used for full attack on goal.

Soccer The game is played in two 45min halves and 15min half time. High school soccer is played in two 40min halves and 10min half time. There is one referee on the field and two official linesmen.
