Presentation transcript:

What you will learn today … Define the term element Make observations of some elements List the names of some common elements and their symbols Attempt to deduce the names of some elements from observations

Define an Element An Element is a substance that contains one kind of atom only Examples include: Copper, Mercury and Oxygen Write these notes in your book

Observations of Elements Use a new page to draw up a table with two columns and about 20 rows Head the left column “Element name” Head the right column “Observations” Examine each element around the laboratory and write two(2) observations Extension: Try to make three (3) observations Challenge: List all elements that are metals

Elements and Symbols Study the special table of all the known elements On the sheet provided, fill in the symbols of some of these elements Stick the sheet in your book

What you have learned today … Defined an element Made observations of some elements Listed the names of some common elements and their symbols For homework you will deduce the names of some elements from observations
