Guy Fakes Day ( 烟火节 ) Guy Fawkes led the Gunpowder plot in It was a plan was to blow up King James I and his government. Guy and his group put 36 barrels of gunpowder in cellars under the Houses of Parliament. They got ready to set off a massive explosion. One member of the group sent a letter to his friend in Parliament. He warned him to stay away on 5 Nov. The King's supporters got hold of the letter and the plot was rumbled. Guards broke into the cellars where the gunpowder plotters were waiting. They were arrested, tortured and executed. Modern artist's impression of Fawkes

TODAY For 400 years, bonfires have burned on November 5th to mark the failed Gunpowder Plot. Today, we use the word "guy" to mean "person" or "man", as in "that guy across the street"
