SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION

“Revolve” a drastic and far-reaching change in ways of thinking and behaving; "the industrial revolution was also a cultural revolution" the overthrow of a government by those who are governed rotation: a single complete turn - "the revolution of the earth about the sun takes one year”

Science A systematic field of study or body of knowledge that aims, through experiment, observation, and deduction, to produce reliable explanations of phenomena, with reference to the material and physical world.

“Science is built up with facts, as a house is with stone. But, a collection of facts is no more science than a pile a rocks makes a house.”

BEFORE AFTER Based on the church and Bible No organized method for research and observation Science wasn’t popular or widespread Based on Reason and careful observation Used Scientific Method for Research and data More people became interested in the field of science SAME Interested in planets, sun, and stars Wanted to know more about the world SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION

WHY do WE care? Scientists Believed that the world operated according to a set of laws that people could study, observe, and understand.

Political thinkers (today we call it Political Science – Hmm!) believed that natural laws could also explain behavior of people.

These beliefs led people to call for personal freedom, rights, and equality. If all people are governed by the same laws, then reason tells us that all people must be equal. This was a step toward democratic ideas in Europe and later America.
