Increasing Leadership Capacity in the Youth Workforce Kevin Ford Chief Executive FPM Training

The Leader I wanna be the leader I wanna be the leader Can I be the leader? Can I? I can? Promise? Promise? Yippee I'm the leader I'm the leader OK what shall we do? (Roger McGough)

Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door “ Integrated working is everyone supporting children and young people working together effectively to put the child or young person at the centre, meet their needs and improve their lives. By combining their professional expertise, knowledge and skills, and involving the child or young person and family throughout, practitioners can identify needs earlier, deliver a coordinated package of support that is centred on the child or young person, and help to secure better outcomes for them.” CWDC definition 2008

(2) “Integrated working is achieved through collaboration and coordination at all levels, across all services, in both single and multi agency settings. It requires clear and ongoing leadership and management. At an operational level, it is facilitated by the adoption of common services delivery models, tools and processes.” CWDC definition 2008

Eternal Circle

Outer circle Inner circle Lets stick together Core

I shall be released

Maybe Someday

I shall be free The SEMCO way Ask why – all the time; three times Insistence that workers make decisions for themselves – follow their instincts, passions and ideas Allow workers to create the business – let go of control Insist that workers pursue their own learning and development – their interests and passions

Never gonna be the same again NCSL networked learning programme Public libraries leadership programme Action learning for leaders Youth bank and youth led projects Building confidence and skills Creating learning communities and support Applying learning to practice Taking risks Asking why? Change, change, change

No time to think Space to think, see and understand what is happening Reassurance that the skills and experience we have are still needed Time to develop new ways of working and new ways of seeing Opportunities to learn – for ourselves and together, across boundaries Room to grow as leaders of a new culture of integrated working

Worried blues Still do the day job Still meet the targets set from elsewhere Manage more complex teams and relationships Less secure and safe – less control Find savings and efficiency whilst experimenting See the bigger picture whilst delivering on the ground Do it all by tomorrow…

Gonna change my way of thinking To lead is to live dangerously because when leadership counts, when you lead people through difficult change, you challenge what people hold dear – their daily habits, tools, loyalties and ways of thinking – with nothing more to offer perhaps than a possibility…. Heifetz and Linsky 2002

Tell me, Momma The NYA/FPM Research project, commissioned by CWDC, into leadership and management development in the youth workforce is still gathering views. Contact Kevin Ford for details or go to NYA blogsite for updates and information
