A famous detective

Sherlock Holmes A famous detective. A fictional character created by Conan Doyle. He is very good at reasoning( 推理 ) and observing( 观察 ). In the stories, he was never employed by the police. For more than a century his name has been known in every country of the world; and not only his name, but his appearance too.

He was however the great detective‘s loyal companion. Holmes was aware of his value - he said to him on one occasion: “it may be that you are not yourself luminous( 发亮的 ), but you are a conductor ( 导 体 ) of light".
