#1: Appeal to reason Ask: Does my point make sense? Do I have enough evidence? Will my audience believe my evidence? #1: State research—then draw a conclusion. Topic: All young people should stop smoking. Ex: All people who smoke endanger their health. (major premise) *cite statistics, examples, facts* Therefore, young people who smoke are endangering their health (conclusion)

Appeal to reason cont. Logical strategy #2: Begin with a generalization then apply to a specific example Ex: Genetically modified seeds have caused poverty, hunger, and a decline in bio-diversity everywhere they have been introduced, so there is no reason the same thing will not occur when genetically modified corn seeds are introduced in Mexico.

#2: Appeal to emotion One way is to create visual images in your writing which drive your point home to the read. Ex: description of a woman suffering from emphysema or lung cancer. Never use emotional appeal as a stereotype or to offend!

Appeal to emotion cont. Use specific examples to drive your point home. For ex: with child abuse—tell the story of one child who has been abused. Much more effective than statistics on abuse Only use if it works with your specific argument-don’t get distracted!
