Introduction to Citing the Text Grade 8 Copyright 2014 by Write Score, LLC. All Rights Reserved.

How can you show explicit (clearly expressed, not vague) support for your answers and why is this important?

Showing support for your response. Using explicit word-for-word quotations from the text itself. Finding the best evidence that supports your answer. Connecting the answer and your support back to the question.

Restate the question to show a clear connection from the question to your answer. Using details from the text, find evidence that proves your answer is correct. Quote the text word-for-word using quotation marks.

Handout – How to Cite the Text Properly. Follow along on the Example Question.

With your partner, follow this same process for Question 1.

Handout – Rubric Answer Question 2 on your own by citing the text to prove your answer. Use the rubric to guide your response.

Trade papers. Use the rubric to score your partner’s response. How did you do? Back to the Essential Question: – What does it mean to cite the text? – Why is it so important?

Keep your handout as a resource. Answer the questions on your own using this process. Use the rubric to guide your response.

Describe the conversation between the main character and the police officers. (It is not in quotation form; you will have to “read between the lines” here.) Cite four specific examples of imagery in the story. (imagery – language that uses the five senses) What does the sound of the heart represent?
