Theoretical Physics at CPAN II CPAN days (2as Jornadas CPAN) Valencia, 29 Nov-1Dic 2010 María Jose Herrero (IFT-UAM)

Distr of HEP personnel in Spain (from Fuster´s talk Sep09) (members of projects supported by PNFPA ) TotalTheoryExperiment Doctors (41%) 294 (59%) PhD Students Engineers, technicians, etc Collaborators Total Permanent Staff Ram ó n y Cajal Juan de la Cierva25916

Theoretical Physics Researchers at CPAN  CPAN community organized in 26 Big Groups, with 1 IP signing per group. Ratio Drs CPAN/PNFPA=362/496  CPAN Theoretical Physicists at most of the groups: IFIC, IEM, IFAE, IFCA, IFF, IFT, IGFAE, UB, UCM, UGR, UH, UO, UPV, USAL, UZ  Not all Theoretical Physicists in (Red Nacional) Spanish-HEP are at CPAN. Other consoliders compete: Astroparticle.  Ratio Drs TH-CPAN/TH-PNFPA 133/202 (66%)  Ratio Drs TH-CPAN/All-CPAN 133/362 (37%)

Distribution in Thematical Areas at CPAN

CPAN Researchers Distrib. II (Perm+RyC) (from F.Aguila’s talk Oct10)

Research Fields in Theory at CPAN and Impact  The Theory community at CPAN develops relevant work in a broad range of fields: QCD pheno, Heavy Ions, Electroweak and Flavour Physics, Neutrino Physics, Physics Beyond the Standard Model, Quantum Field Theory, Supersymmetry, Cosmology, Gravity, String Theory, etc  The research achievements in Theory have a big international impact, reflected in many ISI publications and presentations in top-level workshops and conferences

Scientific Publications (CERN SCOAP 3 Study Group) N(authors)<10 (mainly theory): Spain 3,2% N(authors)>10 (mainly experiments): Spain 0,9% N(authors)>10 with at least One Spanish author (mainly experiments): Spain 27% Spain 9th in ranking Spanish Theoretical Phys publication rates and impact are in good position ( from Fuster’s talk PNFPA Sep 2009)

HEP Theory

Actions in TH-CPAN community Research Projects: besides the national PNFPA projects, CPAN Theorists have active participation in EU projects and networks, assuming in some cases (Flavianet, LHCPhenoNet) the European coordination. Training: CPAN Theorists are heavily involved in training activities: important participation in Master Programs of the Spanish Universities, European PhD programms, specialized lectures at postgraduate level at Int.Confs. National Thematic Networks: There is not a TH-Network, but many Theoretitians (pheno, astro, nuc) participate in other Networks with active discussions, but not many collaborations TH/EX Schools, Meetings: Long tradition in Winter Meeting, TAE Often activities at Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pascual

TH-CPAN in National Thematical Networks (Redes Temáticas) CPAN is the natural framework for the creation of these Thematical Networks with common structure for experimental and theoretical researchers: It promotes interactions/collaborations TH/EX TH-CPAN researchers participated in Red Nacional de Fis. de Part TH-CPAN researchers participate at present in: Red Temática de Física del LHC (start Nov 2008, finishing now) 44/120 (37% THs) 1st meet. Granada Oct09 (fruitful, >100 part) 2nd meet. Val Nov10 (>200 part). It Promotes collabs TH/EX Also: Red Española de Futuros Aceleradores, Red Temática de Física Nuclear, Red Temática de Astropartículas, Red Neutrinos Under consideration: Red Temática de Física de Flavour Also active collaboration in Neutrino Physics

Actions for coordination in TH-CPAN The TH area of CPAN is the less coordinated one, probably because it doesn’t need much coordination. First action promoting synergy relation among theorists: Portal del GFT Proposed in 1st CPAN Meeting, Escorial Nov09 Created in Jan 2010 by: Tomas Ortín (Admin) Web putting together the activity in Theory under construction

Actions in the TH web Portal del GFT So far: 67 theory researchers registered. No distinction CPAN /NON-CPAN Several institutes already involved It is very convenient for communication and anouncements within the TH community. TH Group Mailing. Blogs. Thematic web-pages..….. under construction

Actions in the Portal del GFT Invitation: all theorists (CPAN and others) are wellcome to join this action under construction

Main CPAN support to TH activity In spite of the numerical importance of theorists at CPAN, an important part of the funding goes to technical support to experimental groups (they need it more) Funding usualy distributed into the 26 CPAN-groups according to their participating quotas. Funding is not according to areas. Areas Distrib: Ex 25,51%, Astro 19,14%, Nuc 21,22%, TH 22,12%, Others 11,95% Total ammount allocated to TH ( ) : ,34 euros Most of CPAN support to TH activity goes to: postdocs : ,34 euros (95%) conferences/schools: euros (5%)

CPAN TH-Postdocs CPAN allocated contracts in all areas: TH: Total 24 ( 24 Postdocs) Ex: Total 21 ( 6 Postdocs, 15 Technicians) Astro: Total 23 (9 Postdocs, 14 Technicians) Nuc: Total 25 (11 Postdocs, 14 Technicians) Others (Acc, Comp., Tech Trans, Scie Train : Total 12 (12 Technicians) Evaluation system: External referees, priorities stablished in the groups, Final selection by Executive Comm. (CE) Funding per postdoc euros/year (now ) TH-CPAN postdocs/total CPAN contracts 24/105 (23%) 14 Th Posdocs have already started: 3 of them have been interrupted due to promotion to Ramon y Cajal or permanent positions. Many starting now. TH-CPAN postdocs from different nationalities: 7 Spain, 6 Italy, 2 France, 2 China, 1 Finland, 1 Germany, 1 Israel, 1 Japan, Lithuania, 1 Russia, 1 Korea (16 more Postdocs forthcoming 2011)

CPAN TH-Postdocs distrib in groups He, Zhiguo UB Schindler, Andrea IFT García Cerdeño, David IFT Grinza, Paolo IGFAE Li, Xin-Qiang IFIC Idilbi, Ahmad UCM Mannarelli, Massimo UB Kittel, Olaf UGR Grcía del Moral, M.Pilar UO Paukkunen, Hannu IFGAE Masjuan Queralt, Pere UGR Olmo Alba, Gonzalo IFIC Delahaye, Timur IFT Beom Park, Chan IFT Ruiz Femenía, Pedro IFIC Biggio, Carla IFAE Karciauskas, Mindaugas UGR Urakawa, Yuko UB Greynat, David UZ Giordano, Matteo UZ Megías Fdez, Eugenio IFT Frigerio, Michele IFAE Vernov, Sergey ICE Cabrera, Daniel UCM Pollney, Denis UIB IFT(4+1), IFIC(3), UB(3), UGR(3), IFGAE(2), IFAE(2), UCM(2), UZ(2), UO(1), ICE(1), UIB(1)

Distribution of TH CPAN Postdocs in Areas (from F.Aguila’s talk Oct10)

CPAN-TH supported conferences

Future Actions in CPAN-TH  Creation of a TH Division at CPAN should be the main goal.  For this, more coordination and putting synergies together in the TH community is needed.  Develop emerging groups (subjects and collabs)  Promote participation in Nat Thematic Networks  Promote collaborations/discussions TH/EX  Suggestions/Ideas are wellcome  More communication: the TH-web helps
