Supporting Parents Maths Curriculum Evening

“Good mathematics is not about how many answers you know… It’s about how you behave when you don’t know.”

Maths is an important life skill. At Hillside, we want our children to be confident mathematicians who are able to use and apply their learning and to understand that it is fine to make mistakes along the way.

The new National Curriculum aims to ensure that pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics reason mathematically can solve problems by applying their mathematics

Principal focus in each phase: EYFS: Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20. Key Stage 1: Pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4): Pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations. Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 & 6): Pupils extend their understanding of the number system, place value and the four operations to include larger integers.

Our aim this evening: Give you an understanding of how maths, particularly the 4 operations (+, -, ×, ÷) are taught within school. To provide you with an idea of the expectations placed on children within each year group in maths. To provide you with ideas, strategies and resources that you can use to support your child at home.

Useful Maths Websites Please take a copy of the Maths leaflet, which includes the list of useful websites.

Workshops: Reception – Introduction to number and practical activities (Reception classroom) Year 1/Year 2 – Introduction to the 4 operations (informal methods) (Y1 classroom) Year 3/ Year 4 - Moving form mental/ less formal to the more formal written methods (Y4 classroom) Year 5/Year 6 - Formal written methods within the 4 operations (Y6 classroom) Each workshop will run twice (20 minutes each) to give you the opportunity to visit more than 1
