Challenge the Idea! ~ Printmaking! ~

Challenge the Idea: Printmaking Deciding what to print is one of the most important tasks you’ll accomplish during this project. Selecting the right image will ensure your satisfaction with your print.

Challenge the Idea: Printmaking Look back over the prints you found during the Digging deeper section. Ask yourself: What images did you like? What subject seemed to work the best. What did the composition of the image look like? Was it up close or far away? *Complete ALL of the following challenges…

Challenge 1: Deciding what to Print. Make a list of possible image ideas. Search for references of topics you are interested in. Narrow your list down to two topics. Make a few thumbnail sketches of your ideas, at least 3. Before moving on to Challenge Two, decide on two possible sketches for your print. 25 points

Challenge 2: Design Your Print In the last challenge, you were asked to decide on two possible ideas for prints. For this challenge you will select one and create a complete drawing for your print. This will become the final piece that you will transfer to your linocut block. 25 points

Challenge 2: Design Your Print Step One: Trace the linocut block onto a piece of paper. You want this drawing to be the exact same size as the block because you will transfer the exact drawing to the block.

Challenge 2: Design Your Print Step Two: Decide which image you will use and begin create your design inside the traced box. Consider the following points.

Challenge 2: Design Your Print Important! Anything you draw will be printed as a mirror image. You do not need to spend time drawing everything backwards. If you place your drawing, drawing side down on the linoleum and burnish the back of the drawing, you can do a graphite transfer. Just make sure you draw with pencil and fill in everything well. Ask Mrs. Nicol if you are not sure what to do still.

Challenge 2: Design Your Print All about the lines! Consider the lines when you draw. A good print uses a wider variation on lines. Thick and Thin Lines Short and long Lines Some Lines Closer Together Some Further Apart

Once you have completed the Challenges you will move on to the final section: Section Four - Your Turn!
