3 The State’s Economy New York's unemployment rate in May 2016 was 4.2 %, which was below the year-ago level of 5.3 %. New York’s labor force fell by 68,200 (0.7 %) people over the year ending May The number of people employed rose over the year and the number of people unemployed but actively looking for work decreased over the year. (not seasonally adjusted numbers)

4 Total nonfarm jobs rose (81,800 or 0.9 %) between May 2016 and May Natural resources & mining; information; and manufacturing sectors lost jobs over the year. Educational & health services; leisure & hospitality; professional & business services; trade, transportation & utilities; construction; financial activities; other services; and government sectors added jobs over the year. ( not seasonally adjusted numbers ) New York’s Nonfarm Jobs Are Rising

5 Central New York’s Economy: Total nonfarm jobs fell 400 or 0.1 percent between May 2015 and May 2016 in the Syracuse metro area. May’s unemployment rate of 4.3 % was below the year-ago level of 5.5 % in the Syracuse MSA. There are job opportunities in fields such as health care, engineering, computers, skilled trades, customer service, high-tech, scientific, R&D, construction, green-related jobs, leisure & hospitality, and accounting, as well as opportunities for entry-level positions. (not seasonally adjusted numbers)
