ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION A mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (x,n,y) and operators (+,-, ●,÷). ex: 3x–5+m-8

ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY This property states that it doesn't matter how we group the numbers (i.e. which we calculate first) when we add or multiply. EXAMPLE ADDITION: (6 + 3) + 4 = 6 + (3 + 4) EXAMPLE MULTIPLICATION: (2 × 4) × 3 = 2 × (4 × 3) = = 13 8 × 3 = 2 × 12 = 24

COMBINING LIKE TERMS Simplifies an expression by summing constants and summing those variable terms in which the same variables are raised to the same power. Ex. 3x+7+5x-3+2x 2 = 8x+4+2x 2

COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY You can swap numbers around and still get the same answer when you add. Or when you multiply. Examples: = × 4 = 4 × 2

A number that is NOT multiplied by a variable in an expression or equation. Ex: In 2x+3 3 is the constant term Constant Term

In a proportional relationship, equations are of the form y=kx, where k is the constant of proportionality. constant of proportionality

Points, sides, edges or angles in two or more figures that are images of each other with respect to transformation. If two figures are congruent, then the corresponding parts of the figures are congruent to each other. Corresponding Parts

Multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately. Ex: 3 × (2 + 4) = 3×2 + 3×4 So the "3" can be "distributed" across the "2+4" into 3 times 2 and 3 times 4. Distributive Property

Two expressions are equivalent if they have the same value. Ex: 2+3 is equivalent to 1+4 Equivalent Expressions

To find the numerical value of. To evaluate an expression, substitute the value(s) given for the variable(s) and perform the operations according to the order of operations. EX: 2x+y-10 when x=4 and y =3 2(4)+3-10 = = 1 Evaluate(an expression)

A relationship is proportional if one quantity is a multiple of the other. Ex: Proportional Relationship

A drawing that shows a real object with accurate sizes except they have all been reduced or enlarged by a certain amount (scale factor). Scale Drawing

A ratio that compares the sizes of the parts of one figure to the sizes of the corresponding parts of a similar figure. Scale Factor

Figures that have the sames shape, but are not necessarily the same size. The measures of corresponding angles are equal and the ratio of the corresponding side lengths are equal. similar figures

To write a less complicated expression with the same value, no parenthesis and no like terms. Ex: 3-(2x+7)-4x = x simplify

A single number, variable, or the product of numbers and variables. Ex: -45, 1.2x, or 3xy 2 terms

unit rate

A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable variable
