Flipped Learning What it is Why FL Pros and Cons Research & Survey Examples
What is Flipped Learning?
Flipped Learning Definition “Teacher-created video and interactive lessons accessed at home. Class becomes place to work through problems, advance concepts and engage in collaborative learning” (Tucker, 2012).
A bit of the history In 2000, Barker provided lecture notes, put online discussion and quizzes on a webpage and spent class time on group work and practice problem sets. Lage, Platt and Treglia (2000) use video-taped lectures. Jonathan Bergmann & Aaron Sams began flipping the class in 2007 to the 950 Woodland Park High School chemistry students.

Why FL? Students learn in different pace Not enough TIME in class to interact with students Generation Z Students do not get help with their homework
PERSONALIZE LEARNING EXPERIENCE (SPRINGEN, 2013) OR HUMANIZING CLASSROOM (KHAN, 2011) FLIPPED LEARNING
Flipped Learning What it is Why FL Pros and Cons Research & Survey Examples
Pros Students-focused approach – student is actively engaged with the course material without losing the content coverage TIME in-class is best used to engage students and facilitate higher order thinking skills, students’ inquiry, labs, hands-on activities, independent problem solving, independent help from teachers and small group discussion.
Pros (2) Increase interaction Using video in learning – interactivity effect, an advantage for absence students, can be used to review for exam. Students take the ownership of their learning
Cons Difficulty in assessing the video/ internet Require a careful preparation and commitment from TEACHER Some parents do not agree with homework Require students to take responsibility for their learning

Research on Flipped Classroom Strayer (2007, p.16) It is important that teachers give a chance for student to reflect on their understanding and give feedback on it.
Research on FC (2) Lage, Platt & Treglia (2000) Students generally preferred the inverted classroom to a traditional lecture. Inverted classroom engages a wider spectrum of learners, in particular more female students. Baker (2000) Students are reported of getting more personal attention, had more control over their learning, and thought more critically about the material following the classroom flip.
Research on FC (3) Foertsch et al. (2002) Students in reversed class gave significantly higher ratings to all aspects of the course because they felt it was EASIER to take notes and understand the lectures presented via eTEACH than attending the same lecture. Zappe et al. (2009) Require students to complete an online quiz before class (preparation “gate check”) Keep the video short ( min) Briefly review the content before in-class activities Add multimedia to the online lectures to keep students interest and engaged.
