State Standard (t) Each school board shall provide access to an appropriate program for pupils identified as gifted and talented in each of the following categories: Intellectual Ability Specific Academic Ability Creative Ability Artistic (Visual & Performing Arts) Ability Leadership Ability Multiple criteria for the identification of gifted and talented pupils shall be used. A pupil may be identified as gifted and talented in one or more of the categories. The school board shall provide access, without charge for tuition, to appropriate, systematic and continuous K-12 programs that expand the development of pupils identified as gifted or talented as required by state statute. The school board shall provide an opportunity for parental participation in the planning of the proposed program.

Gifted and Talented Educational Programming Policy - #416 The Eau Claire Area School District strives to offer each student learning experiences appropriate to his/her individual educational needs, interest and capabilities. The ECASD shall provide a continuum of services to high achieving students including, but not limited to, those identified as gifted and talented based on the guidelines set forth in the Wisconsin Guidelines for Gifted and Talented and shall include students who demonstrate high performance capability in intellectual, creative, artistic, leadership or specific academic areas.

Even if your child is an outlier in the classroom, 85-90% of all student needs are met in daily classes. Teachers may be able to accommodate them with alternate or more in-depth work. Gifted education staff meet with teams of teachers, small groups, and individuals throughout the year to assist in meeting the needs of students.

Fifth Grade Academic Evaluations Beginning in 2 nd trimester, 5 th grade students may be evaluated for potential subject accelerations in math and/or science and a subject enrichment in English. Middle School course assessment results and placement recommendations are mailed home to families after the evaluation process has been completed and reviewed.

Credits & Transcripts Wisconsin Act 138; Amended/Enacted: March 14, 2014 School Board Rule PLEASE NOTE: Students earn “credit” in math and/or science such that they move on to the next course. They do not receive GPA credits that count towards GPA or credits required for graduation or graduation requirements. Those must all be earned in high school. There is a notation on the student’s high school transcript indicating the course taken in middle school and the grade earned.

Course Credit Requirements (From School Board approved Specific Graduation Requirements Rule (1) The District has established standard credit requirements for high school graduation. All required credits must be earned by completing the course with a minimum passing grade while the student is enrolled in the high school grades. Students in grades 7 and 8 may receive high school credit for the following classes: Algebra, Geometry, Biology, and World Language I. The credit earned shall not be used to meet the minimum credit requirements in math, science, or elective areas. Students will need to complete the required number of credits in each department during grades All courses, regardless of level, will be taught by a teacher licensed in the subject/grade.

Math & Science Graduation Requirements Math: 3 Credits Science: 3 Credits Credits must be earned during grades 9 – 12 only to count toward graduation.
