Chemical Bonding

The joining of atoms to form new substances. Chemical Bonding The joining of atoms to form new substances. Example: 26 letters in the alphabet (Elements)

Compounds A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.

Ion A charged particle that forms when an atom or group of atoms gains or loses one or more electrons. (A charged atom)

Chemical Change has occurred 17 Sodium Chlorine 11 Cl Na 23 35 P 17 N 18 P 11 N 12 NaCl Sodium Chloride Chemical Change has occurred Lender - An atom that has 1,2,3 electrons in the outer shell (Metals) Borrower - An atom that has 5,6,7 electrons in the outer shell (Non-metals)

Ionic Bond A bond that forms when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, which results in a positive ion and a negative ion. * When ions bond, they form a repeating three-dimensional pattern called a crystal lattice.

Hydrogen Chlorine HCl Hydrochloric Acid H Cl 1 17 1 35 P 17 N 18 P 1

A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. Covalent Bond A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.

Molecule The smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physical and chemical properties of that substance

Valence Electrons An electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom and that determines the atom’s chemical properties

Labeling Periodic Table Oxidation Numbers Family 3B http://newsfirst.lk/english/node/27909

Cheat Sheet Glue on the back of the Periodic Table. Roman Numerals after Elements: The Roman Numerals show how many electrons are in the outer shell.

Definitions Chemical Formula – a group of symbols and numbers showing the number and kinds of atoms in a molecule or compound. Subscript – A number written to the lower right of a symbol showing the number of atoms in a molecule or compound. Oxidation (valence) Number – The number of electrons an atom lends, borrows, or shares.

Writing Formulas Write the name of the compound. Write symbols for the parts of the name. Write oxidation numbers of each symbol above the symbol. Criss-cross oxidation numbers, reduce and write the formula.

Ionic Compound: Lithium Chloride Element: Lithium + Chlorine Li +1 Cl -1 Li Cl 1 1 reduce Formula: LiCl

Ionic Compound: Magnesium Oxide Element: Magnesium + Oxygen Mg +2 O -2 Mg 2 2 Reduce: 2/2 = 1 Formula: MgO

Ionic Compound: Aluminum Oxide Element: Aluminum + Oxygen Al +3 O -2 Al O 2 3 reduce Formula: Al2O3

Extra Credit Questions: (+3 each) Lewis Dot Structure Sodium + Oxygen Magnesium + Iodine
