Civil War A nation divided

New Territories cause Conflict The territories gained from Mexico after the Mexican- American War caused conflict over the issue of slavery. Would the new territories be slave or free states? The nation divided between the North and South.

Compromise of 1850 The bill had several parts: Texas gave up all claims to NM California became a free state No slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico: the state would decide when they became a state No slavery in Washington D.C. Fugitive Slave Laws This compromise only temporarily solved the issue.

Civil War Basic Facts North versus the South

Civil War Basic Facts North known as Yankees or Union= 23 States South known as rebels or Confederates= 11 states Border states had people fighting on both sides Over 1/2 million people were killed in the Civil War

Causes Slavery States' Rights Free versus slaves states

Slavery slavery had been outlawed in northern states As the U.S. expanded west, the issue of slavery divided the nation When Lincoln was elected President many feared he would abolish slavery in all the states 7 southern states left the Union forming the Confederate States of America

Underground Railroad Set up to help slaves escape from the South to the North or Canada Slaves hid in barns and houses

Abraham Lincoln 16th President of the United States from until his assassination Emancipation Proclamation -January 1, freed slaves in states that seceded (broke away from the Union) but not the border states

Advantages of the North Larger population Very industrialized part of country with munitions production Efficient railroad system

Battle of Gettysburg Turning point in the war July 1-3, 1863 North won this battle Last time South invaded the North 100,000 people died

End of War General Lee surrendered April 9, 1865 All Confederate troops had to take oaths of loyalty to the Union Lincoln was lenient because he did not want to humiliate the South and cause more conflict

Effects of the Civil War Single unified country Slavery abolished Increased federal over state power Western lands increasingly open to settlement
