Grey Bruce has a high rate of enteric illness (vomiting, diarrhea). In 2013, Grey Bruce had the highest rate of Salmonella and the third highest rate of Campylobacter in Ontario. These bacteria can make people sick for several days with diarrhea, vomiting, fever and cramps. It can also lead to more serious illness.

You can’t see, smell or taste germs. Keep barn clothes/work clothes (boots, coats, overalls) separate from other clothes. Wash hands when coming into the home, before eating, and when they’re dirty. Cover open wounds or cuts when working outdoors or with animals.

Inspection Checklist Hand HygieneDiaperingSurveillance and Outbreaks Hand washing sinks are conveniently located with proper supplies. Diaper instructions are posted. Daily health surveillance is conducted. Proper hand hygiene is performed. Children are only diapered on a dedicated diaper changing surface. Exclusion guidelines are available. Diaper changing surface is non-porous and easy to clean. Space is available to temporarily isolate a child who becomes ill. Proper disposal of dirty diapers. Outbreak resources are available and conveniently located.

Cleaning and Disinfecting An appropriate disinfectant is used according to manufacturer's instructions (e.g., dilution, contact time, etc.) Soft washable toys and dress up clothes are laundered at least weekly and when soiled. Potty is cleaned and disinfected after each use.Water tables are properly used. Bathrooms are cleaned and disinfected at least once a day and when soiled. Indoor sandboxes are properly used. Equipment, including toys, is constructed so it can be properly cleaned, disinfected, or laundered. Outdoor sandboxes are properly used. Infant mouth toys are properly cleaned and disinfected after each use. Portable wading pools are properly used. Infant and toddler toys are cleaned and disinfected daily and when soiled. Cribs/cots/mats are cleaned and disinfected weekly and when soiled. Preschool toys are cleaned and disinfected weekly and when soiled. Bedding is designated for each child and laundered weekly and when soiled. Floors are appropriate to the area and clean.

IPAC in Child Care Centres Protocol, 2016 Provide education, including educational resources, to assist in implementing and maintaining appropriate IPAC policies and practices, and preparing for outbreaks, including the detection of outbreaks. Provide written information to child care centres to specify reporting requirements of cases and outbreaks of reportable infectious diseases. Assist child care centres in the management of infectious disease outbreaks Provide annual in-service education

IPAC Policies, Programs, Practices Health evaluation of children for signs and symptoms of communicable disease; General hygiene and disinfection practices; Hand hygiene; Appropriate diapering and toileting practices; Prevention of occupationally acquired infections, including surveillance and management; and Communication with parents and staff with respect to infection prevention and control practices and communicable diseases in the child care centre. Required reporting of cases and outbreaks of reportable diseases to the medical officer of health; Management of/response to infectious diseases in the child care centre Exclusion of sick children, staff, parents, and/or volunteers.
