NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe and the second biggest in the world after the Carnival of Rio de Janiero in Brazil. It began in 1964 as a way for African Caribbean communities to celebrate their cultures and traditions. This Festival started in the island of Trinidad in the Caribbean to commemorate the abolition of slavery. In the past the British took slaves from Africa to the plantations in the Caribbean, where they worked and grew cotton, tobacco, cocoa, coffee, rice, tea.

It takes place every August Bank Holiday weekend in the streets of Notting Hill in London. This Carnival is an amazing mix of sounds, colours and ethnic food. Steel bands, floats and people wearing colourful costumes parade through the streets of Notting Hill. Music is very important for the Notting Hill Carnival, with traditional and contemporary songs. You can listen to steel bands, soca, calypso, reggae but also R&B, latin jazz and samba.
