By using the hands-on activity of cooking, this four day lesson consisting of research, writing, and project-making focuses on the students’ knowledge about different cultures. While featuring some of the major concepts from both the English Language and Mathematics Connecticut Common Core Standards, this project will push the students to connect their own cultures to what they learn everyday in the classroom. It will be broken down into five 50 minute class periods. This lesson is designed for fifth graders in a Montessori school type environment because it is very much hands-on and directed towards specific interests rather than normal teaching methods.

Students will develop their interpersonal and intrapersonal skills by working together in groups of three Students will gain application, analysis, and synthesis skills through by solving the recipe when cooking and by creating an organized final poster- board Students will gain speaking, language, and social skills when conducting a mock interview with a family member and when presenting in front of their peers and family on the final day Students will improve their linguistic skills when writing out their recipe step-by-step in a paragraph

MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday -Mock interview discussions will be conducted by each group -The three students will have to pick only 1 family member for the whole group to interview -A worksheet with questions will be given to the students to ask the guests -The students will take their answers and collectively type out their recipe on a computer creating a sentence paragraph -The students will be cooking their recipes on this day in the school cafeteria -Guidance will be provided by not only the teachers, but also cafeteria workers -The food ingredients will be provided by the school as well -poster board projects will be assembled during this time -The students will use glue sticks to attach their worksheet and paragraph -Each day the students will be taking pictures with instant print cameras, those will be added too -Presentation Day -Family and friends will be invited -Students will present in a 5 minute time frame by covering the first 3 days of work

The guest will be picked by the students well in advance The teacher will give instructions to guests through an beforehand, so that they know what’s expected. All three group members will fill out the same worksheet made by the teacher with the answers from the guest Once finished, the students and the guest will take a picture together

In the teacher , the guest will be notified to keep the cooking very simple and completion time under a half hour All of the prepping will take place on the lunch tables, and once ready to use heat (if needed) the cafeteria workers will aid them to the kitchen and give assistance Again, another picture will taken of the students and their freshly made food
