RESTORATION LITERATURE ( 1660 – 1700 ) The year 1660, when the attempt to establish a Puritan republic in England ended in failure and the Stuart monarchy was restored by the return of Charles II to his capital, is commonly, and justly, regarded as the initial date of modern literature. Theatres were reopened and there were many dramas produced. Most of them are about religious dramas.

Surviving Puritanism -John Bunyan ( ) -Samuel Pepys ( ): the diary the diary -John Evelyn ( ): the diary about special pleasure in observing places, gardens and public edifices when he visited Frances, Italy and Holland the diary about special pleasure in observing places, gardens and public edifices when he visited Frances, Italy and Holland -John Locke ( )

Religiously Puritan age was one of even greater ferments than that which marked the beginning of the Reformation. The Catholic church has always held true to the ideal of a united church. Instead of the world-wide church which was the ideal of Catholicism, came the ideal of purely national Protestantism. In literature, social confusion was reflected by John Bunyan, John Donne, Samuel Daniel, and George Herbert in their metaphysical works.
