Citing Sources (Internal Citations and Works Cited) Whenever you use information from sources in an essay, you must give credit to the source. In MLA, we do this by using internal citations that correspond with citation on your Works Cited Page. Example: – The value of a college education ultimately hinges on the major a college student chooses. Students who choose “engineering and math degrees [command] starting salaries ranging from $38,673 to $52,200” (Marklein). Clearly, choosing the right major will increase the salary you make after graduation which makes getting a college degree a worthwhile investment. – The internal citation in the essay corresponds to an entry on the Works Cited page. Internal Citation 1. “He spoke to us in German and then left us behind” (Donaldson 45). 2. “I never thought of myself as proud”, says Jennings in his book Pushing the Limits of Political Journalism (107). You only need the page # since the author is mentioned in the sentence. 3. “Politics is such an interesting field” (Smith 451). 4. “Enraged how he felt after the episode” (Xavier 233). 5. In Political Guide to the United States, Xavier and Yater explore the idea that the U.S. is changing politically (544). You only need the page # since the author is mentioned in the sentence.

Creating a Works Cited Page Step 1: Locate the sources you plan to use (you need at least three, but your essay will be stronger/better if you use multiple sources of evidence). Step 2: Open a Word Document and type the words “Works Cited”. Times New Roman; 12 point font; centered; click on Double Spacing. Step 3: Open Easybib.com (my preference) or Citation Machine or any citation website you prefer. Step 4: Follow directions.
