7 TH GRADE MATH GRACE WILDAY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL “RAISE THE PRAISE” Introduction to Integers

Objectives 1. TLWBAT work as a team to order integers from least to greatest with 100% accuracy. 2. TLWBAT identify the appropriate integer to represent the given situation and then order the results from greatest to least by correctly answering at least 8 out of 10 questions. CPIs: Common Core 7.NSA.2a, 7.NSA.2b, 7.NSA.2c, 7.NSA.2d, 7.NSA.3

What’s the Temperature Like? What could the temperature be on a hot sunny day? What does it means for the temperature to be 10 degrees below zero? Where is 15 degrees below zero on the thermometer? Is it hotter or colder than 10 degrees below zero? Since 15 degrees below zero is colder then 10, -15 < Turn thermometer sideways.

Thermometer Number Line

Integers What are integers?  The set of whole numbers and their opposites.  Any positive or negative whole number

Don’t be so Negative id= id=121930

Opposite Numbers Opposite numbers are the same distance from zero on a number line, but they are on opposite sides of zero. The zero is like a mirror.  Example: 4 and -4 are opposites

Name the Opposite 6 and ____ -2 and ____ 437 and ____

Integers in Real Life What are some real life examples of when we would use integers?  Temperature  Bank account balance  Elevation above or below sea level

Practice Tell what integer represents each situation.  The temperature in February drops 19 degrees below zero. -19  Kiera has $64 in her bank account. +64  Isaiah dives 12 feet below sea level. -12

Greater than, Less than, or Equal to Greater ThanEqual to Less Than

Comparing Integers Compare integers by telling if one is greater than, less than, or equal to the other. Use the symbols >, <, and =. 8 ___ 6 -2 ___ 4 1 ___ -3 5 ___

Ordering Integers Write the integers in order from least to greatest. 4, 0, -6, -4, 7 2, 8, -5, 0, -1 32, -46, 27, 51,

Ordering Integers – Group Challenge Wait for your teacher to provide you with an index card and directions. 0

Exit Ticket: Closure Order the following integers from least to greatest. -15, 3, 0, -2, 12, -10
