Learning Objectives and Vocab.  Learning Objective #2: I can compare and order rational numbers. ○ Standard: found in grade 6 CCSS  Vocabulary: Rational numbers Common denominator Least common denominator (LCD)

Rational Numbers  A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a ratio of two integers.  Examples: Fractions, terminating decimals, repeating decimals, percents, and integers are all rational numbers.

Compare and Order  What does it mean to compare numbers? What symbols are used to compare?  What does it mean to order a set of numbers?

Comparing/Ordering Fractions  Can we compare 3/7 and 5/12?  When comparing and ordering fractions we need to have common denominators. You can use the least common denominator, or LCD, which is the least common multiple of the denominators.  After finding a common denominator, we need to make equivalent fractions.

Comparing Fractions

 You can also turn fractions into decimals and compare decimals…

Rational Numbers  Are all numbers rational numbers? Nonterminating, nonrepeating decimals are called irrational numbers. ○ En example of an irrational number is pi,, which is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. ○ pi = …
