Presentation transcript:

Verb forget followed by to eat and eating :  Harold forgot to eat lunch today. The sentence means that Harold did NOT eat lunch today. He may have been eating his lunch regularly, but as far as today, he missed this one specific meal. He missed this one-time event.  Harold forgot eating lunch last week. In this case, the sentence is clear when it indicates that Harold did NOT eat one of his weekly lunches. But it also infers that Harold might have missed more than one lunch last week. To clarify this issue, the sentence could be as follows:  Harold forgot eating lunch on Wednesday and Friday last week.

 Forget / regret / remember When these verbs are followed by a gerund, the actions could have been missed or done more than one time. Example: The woman remembers talking to that person in the past. But when these verbs are followed by an infinitive, the actions were missed or done one time only. Example: Today we all remembered to turn off our cell phones in class.  Forget with a gerund is often used with never for a memorable previous action. I'll never forget going to Japan.  Forget with an infinitive means that something happens at or after a certain time. Don't forget to meet me at 5.00.

 Regret followed by a gerund means the action took place in the past. Example: I don’t regret selling my old car. My new one is much better. This person sold his old car some time ago, and he doesn’t regret it. He now has a better car and is much happier with it.  Regret followed by an infinitive is often used to announce bad news. Example: We regret to inform that your flight has been canceled. Some common infinitives used with regret are: to announce, to say, to tell, and to inform.

 Stop with a gerund means to end an action. - I stopped eating fast food last year. - I can't stop loving you. - Stop being so annoying! - I think you should stop smoking.  Stop with an infinitive means to interrupt an action. - I was walking to the subway station, and I stopped to say "Hi" to my friends. - I was working at home, and I stopped to answer the 'phone.  Remember with a gerund refers to a previous action. - I remember meeting you last year. (I met you before now).
