How do gender roles affect families? Write down the date and key question on a fresh page in your book. Then make a copy of the spider diagram and put in your ideas What makes a family work?

What does the video suggest about traditional roles for men and women?

Traditional roles in the family MenWomen

Modern roles in the family MenWomen

Advantages of each? TraditionalModern Clear roles for each individual More chance for everyone to use their strengths Reflects the “nature” of men and women Respects the “nurture” of each individual Everyone knows where they stand No assumptions about who should do what Creates a strong sense of identity Responsibilities can be shared evenly

How does this relate back to what makes a family work? 1.Use highlighters to show which points you think are supported by traditional gender roles and those supported by modern ones (remember to make a key). Bear in mind that it might be neither! 2.Using these points complete a paragraph starting: “I think that tradition / modern gender roles make families work because…” 3.Extension: If you finish quickly you could round things off by explaining why you think the other option doesn’t work so well.
