SME Statistics Program Progress Report Coverage As defined by STC Business Register All small and medium sized employer businesses in Canada (1–250 employees) = 900K approx. All non-employer businesses in Canada (self – employed) = 1.3M approx.
Program Content Four classes of data: Primary data (micro level) Basic business characteristics Business #, NAICS and Geography for active businesses taken from BR Employment and revenue data taken from tax Value added data (micro level) Derived from primary business characteristics Survival rates; birth rates; profit ratios; high growth businesses
Program Content Secondary data (micro level) Financial information taken from tax Potential fields include salaries & wages, assets & liabilities, revenue and expenses, net income etc. Auxiliary data including metadata (aggregate level) Links to domain estimates from surveys in STC Financing, innovation, exports, entrepreneurial sub- populations – women, Aboriginals etc.
SME Planned Outputs Standard set of outputs annually Tables by industry, geography, employment size, revenue size Custom tables based on client needs Different size groups; industry detail, sub- provincial geography Limited by confidentiality and quality considerations Provided on a cost recovery basis
Concepts - Employment Calculated using information from payroll deduction account in CRA Note: Self employed who are not a salaried employee (no payroll deductions remitted to CRA) have an employment count of 0 Total employment (currently available for each business) Average 12 month head count
Concepts - Employment Full time employment / part time employment (planned) Full time = # employees whose employment insurance deductions = maximum annual contribution Part time = # employees whose employment insurance deductions < maximum annual contribution Total employment = full time + part-time
