Chapters 2 and 3 Review -Natural Resources -The Problem with Trash

What kind of energy is being used when the sun heats a room? Solar energy.

What is a natural resource? Any useful material from Earth.

What is a renewable resource? (the definition) A resource that can be replaced.

Give an example of a renewable resource. Water, trees, air, plants.

What is a non-renewable resource? (the definition) A natural resource that can’t be replaced.

Give an example of a non- renewable resource. Fossil fuels: petroleum/oil, coal, natural gas.

What kind of rock is mined for its minerals? -salt -ore -silver -trees Ore.

Name one way you can conserve resources. Reuse things, recycle when you can, use only what you need.

True or False: It is ok to throw away a pop can because it is made out of a renewable resource. False.

True or False: When you recycle a plastic bottle, you are saving petroleum. True.

What is packaging? The wrapping or container that covers a product.

This means burning your trash. Incineration.

When you put unwanted or bad things into the environment, you are doing this. Polluting.

Name one thing that is good about fossil fuels. Dependable, stored in the ground, can be transported, a small amount has a lot of energy.

Name one thing that is bad about fossil fuels. Can’t be replaced in our lifetimes, hard to find, costs a lot to remove it from the ground, pollutes the air when it is burned.

BONUS QUESTION:

What is being wasted when you throw these things away: 1. plastic bottle_______ 2. pop can_________ 3. magazine_________ 1.petroleum/oil 2. aluminum 3. trees
