Ilam When are we going? June 13th – 17th 2016

Ilam Why are we going? To learn Not just Science, Geography, Sustainability etc. But about ourselves. About getting on with others. About organising ourselves. About self sufficiency, organising our clothes, our money etc.

Ilam Why Ilam? Numerous, local, varied activities. The youth hostel can provide for all our needs - educationally and socially. Sensible distance from home. Good location to work on. Content contrast from Y3/4 trip. Safe, secure environment.

Ilam Why a Youth Hostel? Different experience from the Y3/4 trip. Affordable. Beautiful surroundings. with meals served. Locally organised activities. Central location for activities.

Ilam The Itinerary Monday 13 th June Leave school 9am Journey to Ilam. Stop on way for toilets. Arrive at approx. Unload then eat packed lunch (that you have provided). After Lunch - Activity 1: Bug Hunt and Habitat Building. Into Hostel, unpack, 3 course evening meal, Evening activity – Egg Rockets! Tuesday 14 th June Full English and continental buffet breakfast. Day at Carsington Water Morning/Afternoon activities – Otter Investigation&River Exploration/Water Filtration Evening Meal, as before. Evening activity – Team Challenge Wednesday 15 th June Breakfast as before. Discovery Day – Art in the Park. Full day The children are inspired and challenged to see the natural world in a new way, while focusing on plants and animals in the Peak District. Evening Meal, as before. Evening activity- Orienteering Thursday 16 th June Breakfast. Full day Dovedale Walk. Packed lunch as before. Back in time for Evening Meal Evening Activity – Team Challenge. Start packing then BED. Friday 17 th June Breakfast, then finish packing. Morning - Exploring Ilam - Ilam and the National Park Eat lunch then return Trip – reverse of outward journey. Arrive back at school at about 4.15pm

Ilam First Day’s Procedure Arrive at school and, weather permitting, put cases by the coach. Medicine and money (not first day’s money, children keep that) to group leaders. Make sure travel pills have been consumed. Toilets. On to coach – (sickies at the front) and Off we go. Toilet stop Arrive at Youth Hostel and unload. Lunch Afternoon activities. Discuss safety, fire drill, doors etc. Unpack. Evening Meal. Evening activities. Wash etc, bed. From here on each day runs on similar lines.

Ilam Usual Daily Routine Early risers: up, washed, dressed and ready for a 7 o'clock walk with 2 staff members. ‘Normal’ people: up, washed and dressed etc. in time for breakfast. Breakfast. Reminder of what’s needed for the day, medicine. Up to room, get ready for day’s activities. Down to lounge to collect packed lunch and filled drink bottle. Off we go. Morning activities. Lunch Afternoon activities. Back to Youth Hostel. Up to rooms to unpack backpacks, wash and brush up. Down for evening meal. At end of meal told what's needed for evening activities and what time to be back down ready for…. Evening activities. Back up to room, wash, ready for bed. Down with drink bottle ready for filling, evening drink, snack, medicine, collect money for next day. Instructions and details for following day. Brush teeth, toilet, bed and zzzzzzzzzzzz

Phone, letters in Stamps and addresses Sweets No electronics at all or felt tips! Suitcase contents Birthdays Medical forms Supervision Slippers

Ilam One for the children Q - What happens if I don’t behave? A - Your parents have to come and take you home!

Ilam Other Bits and Pieces Essential info is on the handout e.g. itinerary, clothes suggestions, contact details etc. First time away. Let us know if there is anything else that could be helpful to us. E.g. Sleep walkers, bed wetters, allergies-should be on medical form etc. ‘Group Text’ for arrival in Derbyshire and return time to Deeping if you want!
